50 Famously Successful People Who Failed At First
Not everyone who’s on top today got there with success after success. More often than not, those who history best remembers were faced with numerous obstacles that forced them to work harder and show more determination than others. Next time you’re feeling down about your failures in college or in a career, keep these fifty famous people in mind and remind yourself that sometimes failure is just the first step towards success.
Business Gurus
These businessmen and the companies they founded are today known around the world, but as these stories show, their beginnings weren’t always smooth.
- Henry Ford: While Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five time before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.
- R. H. Macy: Most people are familiar with this large department store chain, but Macy didn’t always have it easy. Macy started seven failed business before finally hitting big with his store in New York City.
- F. W. Woolworth: Some may not know this name today, but Woolworth was once one of the biggest names in department stores in the U.S. Before starting his own business, young Woolworth worked at a dry goods store and was not allowed to wait on customers because his boss said he lacked the sense needed to do so.
- Soichiro Honda: The billion-dollar business that is Honda began with a series of failures and fortunate turns of luck. Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation for a job after interviewing for a job as an engineer, leaving him jobless for quite some time. He started making scooters of his own at home, and spurred on by his neighbors, finally started his own business.
- Akio Morita: You may not have heard of Morita but you’ve undoubtedly heard of his company, Sony. Sony’s first product was a rice cooker that unfortunately didn’t cook rice so much as burn it, selling less than 100 units. This first setback didn’t stop Morita and his partners as they pushed forward to create a multi-billion dollar company.
- Bill Gates: Gates didn’t seem like a shoe-in for success after dropping out of Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data. While this early idea didn’t work, Gates’ later work did, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

“I am an internet marketing newbie. All I am asking you to do for me is to introduce me to the internet marketing from scratch, that is leading me step by step to the internet marketing system. Presently, I have no website, no list and no business yet.” – Akinbiyi Yinka Akinrinola
Many internet marketing newbies have been asking me similar questions and I usually do not bother reply.
Why?
Because the question is too general. Also, I got a feeling that anyone asking such a question is usually not serious in internet marketing.
But today, for the first time (and also the last time), I’m going to answer this question and post it up on our blog, so that I can direct whoever asking such a question back to our blog.
For all the internet marketing newbies out there, there are only 4 steps to making money from internet marketing from scratch.
Step 1 – Make a decision
Step 1 is to make a firm decision that you are going to make it in internet marketing, no but, no however, no unless, no excuse!
If step 1 is not accomplished, there is no need to proceed to the other steps. Quit now and go back to your comfort zone. Internet marketing is not for you. Nothing is, until you make a decision.
Let me tell you something I’ve never told anyone.
I started to explore internet marketing back in 1999, made my first $100 some time in 2004, made my first $1000 in 2006 and made my first $10k in the same year.
What happened in 2006? Did I stumbled upon a secret formula? Not at all.

Everyday out there in the real brick and mortar world, millions and
millions of people drag themselves from the warm, warm beds, take a
shower, grab a cup of coffee, and head off to their jobs as they
are thinking that there has got to be an easier way to make a
living.
Every one of those millions and millions of people knows somebody
who has quit the ‘get-up-and-go-to-work’ grind and is making a very
good living by working on their personal computers from the comfort
of their own homes.
Working from home sounds like an ideal solution to them. Many of
these dissatisfied souls will quit their jobs and plunge head-first
into internet marketing with no preparation, no knowledge of what
they are doing, no education, and no hope of success. Failure is
their only option and they don’t even suspect.
The fact is that according to many sources, more than 90% (Ninety
percent) of all Internet business start-ups end in failure within
the first 120 (one hundred twenty) days. Yes, you read that right.
NINETY PERCENT!
This failure rate should be a warning to those who are considering
trying their hand at making a go of working on the Internet rather
than at a job in the brick and mortar world.
Of course, success is possible. There IS that other 10% (ten
percent) that do succeed. The thing is success doesn’t happen by
accident. And success isn’t just a crap shoot. Success happens
because of some very important factors.
Success happens because people have the right ideas about internet
marketing and how it works. They do not expect to get rich quick or
be able to make a killing over night and retire to a tropical isle.
It is strange but some how the same people who wouldn’t dream of
starting a real world business, think they can make a go of an
internet business even though they have no business background.
People will go into an internet business with the idea that they no
longer have to get up and go to work. They think they can simply
work when the feel like it and still make a good living. They
simply do not expect to have to work hard or work long hours.

I’m quite sure that you have constantly been bombarded with offers from different internet marketing gurus asking you to buy their products or other guru’s products.
The problem is, every product looks good. Even if you have money to buy all of them, you wouldn’t have the time to study them!
The secret, my friend, is to be selective in which guru you listen to.
Let me share with you a little experience of mine:
Some time ago, someone called me on my mobile phone asking if I was interested in making an extra $50,000 in the next three months.
Well, I bothered to answer that call because she was calling from an internet marketing guru’s office. I know that guru and I’ve purchased some high ticket items from him. That’s probably the reason why they have my number in the first place.
So I told her, “Yes, I’m interested.”
She went on to sell me a coaching program from another guru, whom I have not heard before, in a tactful and professional way and frankly, I was impressed.
Before deciding on whether to buy the coaching program, the first thing I did was to Google for the name of this guru and find out how he makes money.
Based on my research, this guru is a national speaker in the self-help industry. He has written many books and been featured in the national TVs. (I don’t know him because I live in Singapore, not US.)
If you remove all the bells and whistles, this guru basically makes money conducting seminars and coaching programs teaching people how to be successful.
I have no intention to become a speaker, nor am I interested to start any coaching program. So whatever experience that this guru is irrelevant to me.
What I’m try to tell you is don’t blindly listen to a guru simply because he is famous. Look behind the scene and find out what he does for living.
If what the guru does is what you envision to do, by all means, listen to everything he says. Or else, that guru is NOT your guru.
Get what I mean?
